There is no Salvation outside 
the Body of Christ

Orthodoxy is all about community. The fierce individualism found in much of what claims to be Christianity is in opposition to the Orthodox understanding of faith. The Church as the Body of Christ is where we are united in Christ, becoming part of community. The ancient Greek word Ecclesia literally means to be called into authentic community.  


It is within the Church that our personal transformation is intimately connected with the interaction we have with others and runs side by side with our fellow believers. Ecclesia in modern usage refers to the Church and her role as a spiritual hospital, a place wherein we receive the healing that comes from Christ.

This truth is demonstrated by the fact that we are called by the scriptures to be at peace with our brethren before receiving the Holy Mysteries. We are asked to forgive others as we would be forgiven. We are even called upon by Christ to love our enemies.

Our Christian faith can not be lived in a vacuum. Our personal transformation requires working out our salvation within community. Even the confession of our sins takes place within this community, for each time we sin, we sin against the whole of the Body of Christ.

Transitory

The Transitory Nature of this Life

The summer before last I responded to a house fire on Vashon Island on a late Monday afternoon. The home was in a remote location and the fire fighters were hard pressed to get to the house in time to save it. They arrived to find a locked gate with a high fence, delaying even further their arrival. One corner of the house was already fully engulfed.

I'd been working on correspondence in my study when I heard the first siren, and the moment I heard the fire truck I also smelled smoke. Stepping out on the porch I could see a large plume of smoke southeast of the monastery. Before my pager went off I was in my vehicle, camera in hand. Fire chaplains often take on the role of station photographer, documenting fires for their departments.

When you live in the heart of a forest, a fire can easily consume far beyond the place of origin. This fire seemed to have started in a fire pit, quickly burning through tall grasses until catching the house on fire. The occupants were not home at the time, so no one was injured.

The thought of the home owners returning to find their house destroyed, left me feeling sad. In the eight or nine years I've served as the island's police and fire chaplain, I've witnessed far too many similar incidents. It is never easy to see families suffering loss, be it a house fire or a sudden death.

Ultimately, all is transitory and there is no real security in this life. A number of years ago a fire in our own forest came within one foot of destroying the Saint John Chapel. I've not taken anything for granted ever since. Natural disasters and the economy have deprived countless American families of their homes and the future does not look bright.

Most of us do not even own our homes, since taxes and mortgages are like a form of rent and make us vulnerable to banks and the Dow Jones. Everything in this life is transitory and can disappear in a moment of time. Even our own life can end abruptly and without warning. Yet as Christians we keep moving forward, embracing whatever God has placed before us. Worrying about the future keeps us from focusing on the horizon and trusting that God is there with us every step of the way.

This life has been given to us as a time of preparation for the eternal life that is our inheritance as God's children. The transitory nature of this world will end when God's kingdom is ushered in and we all stand before the Great Judgment Seat of God. Loss, pain and suffering in this world will have not been in vain if we embrace everything as an occasion for transformation of self. To stand in the presence of God for eternity requires that we be deified, and all of life's suffering is meant to help prepare us for an eternity of communion with the Holy Trinity.

Colossians 3:4-11

When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

Homelessness

We Are Our Brothers Keeper

With the fiscal cliff hanging over the nation, countless individuals are facing the very real possibility that their extended unemployment payments may be coming to an end. This means that even more individuals and families will be facing homelessness. Through no fault of their own, these people are facing the likelihood they will be forced to live in their cars or on the streets. Many children will have their education put on hold because their parents will no longer be able to keep the children in their neighborhood schools. With a sense of shame, these families will join the countless other Americans who make up the homeless.  


Untold numbers of the homeless are our elderly, forced out on the streets because of medical bills, or loss of other income, during the very years that should have been filled with the warmth and security of their own homes.

An astounding one-third of the homeless population is made up of families, and of the more than 3 million people who are experiencing homelessness, 1.3 million are children. According to national studies, even more Americans are at risk of homelessness because millions of low-income American households pay more that 50 percent of their income on rent when estimates say the figure should be no more than 30 percent. This means that a missed paycheck, the loss of their unemployment benefits, a health emergency, or an unpaid bill, creates a crisis that can push them out of their homes and in to homelessness.

Beginning in the early 1980s, the number of homeless Americans grew dramatically, and the face of homelessness became diverse. It came to include mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, and racial and ethnic minorities. The sense of shame and hopelessness that descends upon these people, should be a shared shame for all of us. They are our brothers and sisters, and they are God's children. Some of them could be our former neighbors, or a cousin we have not seen in years. They could even be us.

We are our brothers keeper, and we must, as a people, and a nation, reach out with everything we have at our disposal to help bring these people back into the safety, security, and warmth, of their own homes. No person should be forced to live without shelter, and no child should be forced to live the life of a homeless person. Every homeless family is our neighbor, our brothers and sisters, and we must not allow them to become invisible to us.

Ephesians 5:1-8



Walk in Love

5 Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.

A Man with Dropsy Healed on the Sabbath

Take the Lowly Place

So He told a parable to those who were invited, when He noted how they chose the best places, saying to them: “When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him; and he who invited you and him come and say to you, ‘Give place to this man,’ and then you begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher.’ Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you. 11 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Incense

Let my prayer arise as incense before Thee

From Old Testament times believers have burned incense as an offering when worshiping God. The ancient temple in Jerusalem even had priests whose sole duty was to keep the censer burning twenty-four hours a day.

Ancient pagan kings were often escorted with large fans of peacock feathers and burning incense when entering their palaces. Early Christians took both these symbols for their worship in recognition of Christ as their Sovereign King and Lord. To this day the Orthodox Church uses incense in most of her services, and large circular fans, reminiscent of the peacock fans of ancient times, are held over the Gospel book during the proclamation of God's word during celebrations of the Divine Liturgy.

As a young man attending my very first Orthodox Liturgy, I was struck by the use of incense. The words of the Psalmist King David, "Let my prayer arise as incense before Thee...", is chanted during every celebration of Vespers during the censing of the temple. During every service where there is a great censing of the whole church, the priest (or deacon) censes the frescoes and icons as windows into eternity, as the incense wafts upward as an offering of the people of God.

The people are also censed by the priest in recognition of their having been created in the image and likeness of their Creator God. Incense is so central in Christian worship that it is even used in the worship of the domestic church, where the family gathers in prayer around their own icons, reading the scriptures together, and offering their family prayers to the Lord.

Let my prayer arise as incense before Thee!

Sin as Illness

Church as Hospital of the Soul


Our Orthodox Faith defines sin as an illness that is in need of healing, not as a crime that requires punishment. The Church is a hospital for the soul whose therapists (priests) first sought therapy and then became the therapists. As a healing institution the Church is a place for broken souls. We come before Christ as tarnished images, far from that which God intended. Yet this very Creator God is patient and loving, quick to forgive. Our God invites us to holiness, to be made whole. His grace is sufficient to lift us up out of our mire and into the heights of a joy and gladness that is meant to be eternal. We need only to humble ourselves and ask for help and the Kingdom is ours.



Heaven and hell are not about location but about relationship. All that is needed is our responsive word, followed by action. We say yes to God's invitation while seeking out the therapy that is ours within the life of the Church. Wholeness (holiness) is ours through this relationship with Christ, Who's redemptive act upon the Cross, together with His having conquered death by death, delivers us from the depths of estrangement. We are lifted up to God, having been made whole, and eternal communion with God is our destiny.

Hebrews 10:35-11:7


35 Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. 36 For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise:

And He who is coming will come and will not tarry.

But if anyone draws back,

By Faith We Understand

11 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.

14 And when He came to the disciples, He saw a great multitude around them, and scribes disputing with them. 15 Immediately, when they saw Him, all the people were greatly amazed, and running to Him, greeted Him. 16 And He asked the scribes, “What are you discussing with them?”
